Set up your secure remote access

Follow these simple steps to connect to your work computer from anywhere. It only takes a few minutes.

⚠️

Important: You cannot test the VPN while connected to your office's WiFi. If you're at the office, disconnect from WiFi or use a personal hotspot to test.

🏢

Do this at the office. These steps need to be done while you're physically at your work computer. Once complete, you'll be able to connect remotely from home.

Step 1

Find Your Computer's IP Address

Your IP address is like your computer's phone number on the network. You'll need this to connect remotely.

1

Press the Windows key on your keyboard (the flag icon, bottom-left)

2

Type cmd and press Enter to open the Command Prompt (a black window will appear)

3

Type the following command and press Enter:

ipconfig
4

Look for the line that says IPv4 Address — it will look something like 192.168.1.50

If you see multiple entries, look under "Ethernet adapter" or "Wi-Fi" — whichever you use to connect at the office.

5

Write down your IP address! You'll need it to set up remote access from home.

💡
Tip: You can also find your IP by going to Settings > Network & Internet > Properties and looking for "IPv4 address".
Step 2

Enable Remote Desktop

Remote Desktop lets you access this computer from another device. It needs to be turned on before you can connect from home.

1

Press the Windows key on your keyboard

2

Type Remote Desktop Settings and press Enter

3

Find the switch that says "Enable Remote Desktop" and turn it ON

4

A confirmation will pop up — click "Confirm"

⚠️
Windows Home edition does not support Remote Desktop hosting. If you don't see this option, your computer may be running Windows Home. Contact us at 405-300-0122 and we'll help you find a solution.
Step 3

Prevent Your Computer From Sleeping

If your computer goes to sleep, you won't be able to connect to it remotely. Let's make sure it stays awake.

1

Press the Windows key and type Power & Sleep, then press Enter

2

Under "Sleep", set "When plugged in, put my device to sleep after" to Never

3

You can still turn off the monitor/screen after a few minutes — that's fine. Just make sure the computer itself doesn't sleep.

💡
Tip: Make sure your PC is plugged in and not running on battery. Desktop PCs are always plugged in, but if you're using a laptop at the office, keep it connected to power.
Step 4

Confirm Your Windows Login

When you connect remotely, you'll need to sign in with the same credentials you use at the office. How you find your username depends on how you sign in:

1

Go to Settings > Accounts > Your info

(Press the Windows key, type Your info, and press Enter)

2

Look at what's shown under your name at the top of the page:

  • If you see an email address (like jane@outlook.com) — you sign in with a Microsoft account. Your email is your username.
  • If you see "Local account" — you sign in with a local Windows username. Go to Step 3 below to find it.
  • If you see a company or domain name — you're on a work domain. Go to Step 3 below to find it.
3

Local & domain accounts only: Open a Command Prompt (press Windows key, type cmd, press Enter) and run:

whoami

This will show your username in DOMAIN\username format. That's what you'll use to sign in remotely.

4

Save your username below — you'll need it to connect from home.

💡
Your password is the same one you type when you log into this computer at the office. If you sign in with a Microsoft account, it's your Microsoft password. If you don't have a password set, you'll need to create one before remote access will work.
5

Give this computer a nickname (optional)

This helps you remember which computer this is — especially if you have more than one.

Keep your office computer turned on and plugged in when you leave. If someone turns it off, you won't be able to connect remotely until it's powered back on.

Troubleshooting

  • Make sure you're not on your business WiFi. Disconnect and try from a different network like home WiFi or a mobile hotspot.
  • Double-check your username and password for typos.
  • Restart your device and try again.
  • If your office has lost internet access, remote access won't work until it's restored.
  • If you still can't connect, call us at 405-300-0122.
  • Your work computer might be turned off — if possible, have someone at the office check that your PC is on.
  • Restart your VPN connection and try again.
  • Make sure you're using the correct workstation address.
  • If none of this helps, call us at 405-300-0122.
  • Your VPN might have dropped — check if it's still connected.
  • If your work computer went to sleep, it may have disconnected you. Try reconnecting.
  • A slow home internet connection can cause drops. Try moving closer to your WiFi router or restarting your modem.
  • If the problem keeps happening, reach out to us for assistance.

MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) adds an extra layer of security. After entering your password, you'll receive a one-time code via email. Enter that code when prompted to complete your login. The code comes from OTP@ClinicalNetworking.com.

No worries! Just contact us at 405-300-0122 and we'll reset it for you.
